Lawlinks upgrade

UKCLE PDF project

Project leader: Sarah Carter, University of Kent (e-mail: S.H.Carter@ukc.ac.uk)
Project summary: upgrade of the Lawlinks Web portal
Completion date: October 2002
UKCLE funding: £932.40

Lawlinks, the Web portal for public domain legal information, is used by a substantial number of law schools and law libraries. Originally designed for Kent Law School, it has has now been adopted by many other law schools as their primary source for links. The focus of the portal is quality material for use primarily in legal education.

Although Lawlinks has been regularly maintained, it was in need of a thorough overhaul. The project aimed:

  • to review all sites for currency, relevance, quality and to check all links
  • to rewrite the annotations as necessary
  • to trawl for new sites and evaluate them
  • to evaluate sites submitted to Lawlinks
  • to advise on the structure of Lawlinks and revise as necessary
  • to ensure the material on Lawlinks is of generic application (not just University of Kent)

A research assistant examined existing sites on Lawlinks, proposed amendments to annotations as appropriate and checked all links. Lists of links on well regarded sites and other sources, such as online journals, were also checked to find quality sites to add to the portal. Sites submitted to Lawlinks (held as e-mail messages or browser bookmarks) were also evaluated for possible inclusion. The overall structure of Lawlinks was re-examined and recommendations made as to its possible revision and improvements in navigation.

A record has been kept of all amendments and additions, and a copy of the site before review archived on the Templeman Library server.
